Golden Slipper

The Golden Slipper is an event run by the Australian Turf Club. It is categorised as a Group One thoroughbred horse race and is 1,200 metres (1.2 kilometres long). For a horse to enter, it has to be two years of age and willing to meet the conditions, which are set weight. The Golden Slipper takes place in Sydney, Australia, at the Rosehill Gardens Racecourse.

The Golden Slipper is far from the only race in Australia for two-year-old horses. However, of them all, it is the premier event. Survey all the other races for two-year-olds and you’ll soon see that none of them offers a bigger prize pool. This year, there are 3.5 million bucks up for grabs. This bonanza also makes the Golden Slipper richer than many other regular races in Australia.

On top of that, the setting is a major draw card. The race is hosted by the Australian Turf Club and takes place at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse. If you spend the day there, you will see numerous other important and exciting races, including the George Ryder Stakes, The Galaxy, Ranvet Stakes, and the Rosehill Guineas.

1957 was the year the Golden Slipper was inaugurated. The first ever winner was an incredible horse by the name of Star Kingdom. In fact, he sired another four Golden Slipper champions. Today, many high performing horses are distantly related to Star Kingdom.

Before the race is held, trainers, jockeys and punters around the country wait impatiently for the barrier selection. This announcement is also big with the public in general. Like the Melbourne Cup, the Golden Slipper is an important part of Australian popular culture. People all over the nation look forward to finding out which horse will be positioned in which barrier.

That said, barriers alone do not determine Golden Slipper results. Their role depends on the race. To get a deeper understanding, try studying the Golden Slipper over time. You will see that some barriers matter more than others and, over the course of years and years, have a greater chance of creating a winner than others.

The Golden Slipper’s huge prize pool means that it attracts tonnes of interest from trainers and jockeys. Every year, the Golden Slipper field is packed with amazing horses. One of its most riveting aspects is that the young age rule means there are often many underexposed, relatively unknown horses, which bring a dose of mystique and unpredictability into Golden Slipper results.

It’s also interesting that starters from Sydney tend to perform better than those from other places. That said, they certainly face plenty of competition from outstanding horses from interstate. All in all, it isn’t easy to pick the Golden Slipper winner. You need to examine the Golden Slipper form guide in depth, while keeping an eye out for hot Golden Slipper tips and favourable Golden Slipper odds.

Golden Slipper Field and Odds

Getting a horse into the Golden Slipper field is difficult. After all, there is $3.5 million of prize money available, so members of the racing community all over Australia are keen to get a look in. On top of that, the size of the field is always limited to just 16 horses. To be good enough to get in, a starter has to be on top of its game - and have a trainer and jockey to match.

There are more than one strategies that can be used to qualify. For a start, a horse can gain automatic entry by being the champion in a lead-up race. These include the Silver Slipper Stakes, the Sweet Embrace Stakes, the Skyline Stakes, the Reisling Stakes, the Todman Stakes, the Magic Night Stakes and the Pago Pago Stakes.

Year in, year out, these races are watched intently because a position in the Golden Slipper is at stake. They also provide a wealth of information for punters who are trying to pick the Golden Slipper results as early as possible. By comparing and contrasting performances in these events, you can begin to build a picture of the Golden Slipper field.

However, these winners are not the only horses to watch. The rest of the runners are determined by total career prize money. All nominated horses get a number, letting them know where their earnings rank them. Those with the highest bounties are prioritised.

The best way to track down favourable Golden Slipper odds is by doing extensive research. Rather than accepting any offer made by a bookmaker, check how his/her offer compares with that of others. That way, you’re more likely to get the best deal for your picks. To save yourself some time, access comparisons easily with our handy odds comparison tool. With a few swift clicks, you can put a variety of odds at your fingertips. Then, all you have to do is choose the ones that suit you best.

The 2017 Golden Slipper race will take place on Saturday 18 March at the beautiful Rosehill Gardens Racecourse in Sydney. There will be no more than 16 two-year-old horses in the field, so you can expect to see a selection of Australia’s best, most powerful thoroughbreds. Two emergency entries will also be on standby, in case any of the runners has a problem, be it an injury or illness.

Are you committed to improving your punting game when this year’s Golden Slipper rolls around? Why not get a head start? There are plenty of opportunities to get moving, so that when the final field is announced, you’ll be in the best possible position to pick the winner.
